Alpacas and other camelids are naturally adapted to consuming large amounts of fiber-rich plants. Grass, hay, and water form the foundation of their diet and are essential for healthy digestion and overall well-being.

At the same time, the supply of important minerals and trace elements — especially under European conditions — can vary depending on soil quality, pasture conditions, and feeding practices.

The combination of high palatability, ease of use, and targeted nutrient support makes Camelibra a particularly practical solution for daily feeding.

These fundamentals are important — but what truly matters is how well it performs in everyday use. That is exactly what we have experienced in our own herd for many years.

Our Experience

Proven in Our Own Herd for Over 20 Years

We have been using Camelibra in our own alpaca herd for more than 20 years . What convinced us from the start was not only the composition, but especially how readily and reliably our alpacas accepted it.

Over the years, Camelibra has repeatedly proven itself in daily feeding routines, when calmly handling the herd, and even with selective eaters. Its excellent acceptance and ease of use have made it a trusted part of our feeding program to this day.

After seeing the benefits in our own herd over many years, we wanted to make Camelibra available to other alpaca owners and breeders in Switzerland.

The Benefits of Camelibra in Detail

A Mineral Feed Designed for Camelids

Camelibra combines targeted nutritional support with excellent acceptance and practical everyday use — specially developed for alpacas, llamas, and camels. The following points show why Camelibra works so well in daily feeding routines.

Excellent Acceptance

Many alpacas readily eat Camelibra. Thanks to its alfalfa-based formula and small pellet size, it is often perceived more like a treat than a traditional mineral feed.

🦙

Specially Developed for Camelids

Camelibra was not simply formulated for general ruminants, but specifically developed for alpacas, llamas, and camels.

🌿

Digestion & Foregut Support

Camelibra supports gut health, digestive motility, natural gas release, and the normal digestive activity required for fiber-rich nutrition.

⚖️

Vitamins & Trace Elements

Camelibra contains Vitamin A, D3, and E, as well as selenium, copper, manganese, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and highly bioavailable zinc.

The combination of these characteristics is no coincidence, but the result of targeted development specifically for camelids.

Developed by GWF Nutrition

Camelibra is developed and produced by the British specialist GWF Nutrition — a company with more than 50 years of experience in animal nutrition..

The product was developed in collaboration with alpaca breeders and veterinarians and specifically tailored to the unique nutritional requirements of alpacas, llamas, and other camelids.

Natural Feeding as the Foundation – Minerals as a Targeted Supplement

Alpacas, llamas, and other camelids are naturally adapted to a fiber-rich diet based on grass and hay. At the same time, their digestion and mineral absorption differ significantly from traditional ruminants such as sheep or goats. As a result, camelids are generally more sensitive to imbalances in minerals and trace elements.

Natural feeding with grass and hay forms the foundation of a healthy diet — minerals are intended to complement it in a targeted way. What matters is therefore not only the quantity, but also the quality and bioavailability of the ingredients.

Camelibra specifically complements the daily diet with vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and functional ingredients — tailored to the unique nutritional needs of camelids.

The unique mechanisms of mineral absorption in camelids have been well studied scientifically, including in a technical article by GWF Nutritionwritten by Dr. Tom Shurlock.

Comparison & Classification

Why Not Use an Ordinary Mineral Feed?

Many mineral feeds were developed for sheep, goats, or general ruminants. Camelibra, on the other hand, is specifically tailored to alpacas, llamas, and other camelids. What matters is not only which nutrients are included, but whether the composition, pellet form, and feeding behaviour truly suit camelids.

Camelibra

  • Specifically developed for camelids
  • Small, shape-stable 2 mm Pellets
  • High acceptance among many alpacas
  • Targeted supply of vitamins and trace elements
  • Tailored to the special requirements of camelids
  • Practical for daily use and hand feeding

Ordinary Mineral Feeds

  • Often formulated for sheep, goats, or general ruminants
  • Sometimes available as large pellets, powders, or mineral licks
  • Not specifically developed for camelids
  • Acceptance can vary significantly depending on the product
  • Composition not always tailored to camelids
  • Often less practical for targeted hand feeding in everyday use

Feeding Behaviour of Camelids

Why Pellet Size Matters

Alpacas, llamas, and camels eat differently from traditional ruminants. They do not primarily consume feed by licking, but instead pick it up very precisely with their flexible lips.

Their split upper lip in particular allows them to pick up small feed particles with great precision. This is why the form of a mineral feed is so important in everyday feeding.

  • Mineral lick blocks are often less suitable for camelids, as alpacas do not primarily consume feed and minerals by licking
  • Powder can be more difficult to consume cleanly
  • Large pellets are often less practical for their lips
  • Small, shape-stable 2 mm Pellets are particularly easy to pick up

This is exactly why Camelibra fits so well with the natural feeding behaviour of alpacas and other camelids.

Nutritional Benefits

Camelibra was developed to complement the natural feeding of camelids in a targeted way and to ensure a balanced supply of important nutrients.

The focus is not on feeding large quantities, but on a balanced supplementation of the daily basic diet with important minerals, vitamins, and functional ingredients.

Nutritional Support

How Camelibra Supports Daily Feeding

  • Supports stable digestion and gut motility
  • Supports the the digestion of fibre-rich feed
  • Contributes to a balanced gut flora bei
  • Supplements the daily supply of vitamins and trace elements
  • Supports skin and fleece quality through targeted nutrient supply
  • Can positively support wellbeing, condition, and feed intake positiv unterstützen

What matters is the combination of bioavailable minerals, vitamins, and functional ingredients – tailored to the specific needs of camelids.

Feeding Recommendation

Camelibra is intentionally fed in small quantities and complements the natural, fibre-rich diet of camelids in a targeted way without unnecessarily burdening the digestive system.

Alpacas, llamas, and camels are adapted to consuming large amounts of structured plants such as grass and hay. Too high a proportion of concentrated feed can negatively affect natural digestion and restrict feed movement in the foregut.

👉 For this reason, the daily feeding amount of Camelibra is intentionally kept low – while still providing targeted supplementation with important minerals and trace elements.

☀️ Summer Feeding

1 g

per kg body weight

During summer, 1 g per kg body weight per day is generally sufficient.

Example: An alpaca weighing 60 kg requires approx. 60 g of Camelibra per day.

❄️ Winter Feeding

1.25 g

per kg body weight

During winter, 1.25 g per kg body weight per day is generally recommended.

Example: An alpaca weighing 60 kg requires approx. 75 g of Camelibra per day.

Practical Benefits in Everyday Use

In addition to its nutritional support, Camelibra shows its strengths especially in the daily handling of the animals.

Thanks to its high acceptance and easy handling, Camelibra has proven particularly effective in our daily routine over many years – both during everyday feeding and when calmly guiding and keeping the herd together.

Proven in Daily Use

  • Calm transitions to new pastures
  • Easier herd management and grouping
  • Helps bring individual animals closer in a targeted way
  • High acceptance even among fussy alpacas
  • Low-dust, shape-stable 2 mm pellets
  • Easy and clean to portion
  • Ideal for hand feeding and alpaca experiences

Alpacas follow the bucket with Camelibra – a simple and stress-free way to guide the herd.

The rustling sound of the pellets in the bucket is quickly recognised by the animals. In our herd, this means something very practical: as soon as we move the bucket with Camelibra, many alpacas often come running on their own.

At the same time, Camelibra is very well suited for hand feeding. The pellets remain stable, can be portioned cleanly, and are readily accepted by the animals. This is especially beneficial during holiday stays or alpaca experiences .

This combination of high acceptance, easy handling, and reliable intake has made Camelibra a trusted part of our daily feeding routine for many years.

Cost Efficiency and Value

Camelibra combines a high-quality composition with very economical daily use.

Thanks to the low daily feeding amount, one 20 kg bag lasts for a long time. For an alpaca weighing 60 kg, this corresponds approximately to:

  • around 333 daily portions in summer
  • around 266 daily portions in winter

This means the daily mineral supplementation costs only a few Rappen per animal per day.

As a result, daily supplementation remains cost-effective and easy to integrate into everyday feeding routines, even with larger herds.

For us, Camelibra is not an additional product, but a fixed part of the daily feeding routine.

Over many years, it has shown how important targeted mineral supplementation is for the health, wellbeing, and long-term development of the animals – especially under the pasture and hay feeding conditions common in Switzerland.

At the same time, we have been convinced by its practical everyday use: the animals reliably accept Camelibra, respond to it, and can be guided calmly and without stress.

This combination of targeted nutritional support, high acceptance, and practical everyday use is the reason why we have used and recommended Camelibra for more than 20 years.

Frequently Asked Questions About Camelibra Alpaca Mineral Feed

Which animals is Camelibra suitable for?

Camelibra was specifically developed for camelids and is suitable for alpacas, llamas, and camels. Both the composition and pellet form are tailored to the specific requirements of these animals.

Alpacas differ significantly from traditional ruminants such as sheep or goats in their digestion, feeding behaviour, and nutrient absorption. For this reason, the supply of minerals and trace elements should also be specifically tailored to camelids.

Alpacas do not consume feed by licking, but by picking it up precisely with their flexible lips. The small, shape-stable 2 mm pellets are therefore especially easy for them to pick up and are readily eaten by many animals.

Camelids have a flexible, split upper lip and rely much more on their lips than on their tongue when consuming feed. For this reason, traditional mineral lick blocks or large lick supplements are often consumed less efficiently than small pellets.

The recommended amount is:

  • Summer: approx. 1 g per kg body weight
  • Winter: approx. 1.25 g per kg body weight

An alpaca weighing 60 kg therefore requires approximately 60–75 g of Camelibra per day.

Many alpacas readily eat Camelibra. Thanks to its alfalfa-based formula and small 2 mm pellets, it is often perceived more like a small treat than a traditional mineral feed.

This depends on the number and weight of the animals. For an alpaca weighing 60 kg, one 20 kg bag corresponds approximately to:

  • around 333 daily portions in summer
  • around 266 daily portions in winter
