Responsibility begins with genuine relationships

Since 2004, we have been working together with the Swiss family-owned company APU Kuntur, with locations in Kreuzlingen, Winterthur, and Peru.

From the very beginning, we were impressed by the exceptional quality, modern designs, and distinctive craftsmanship of their alpaca products – and became one of the first resellers of APU Kuntur products in Switzerland.

Peru looks back on centuries of tradition in processing fine alpaca fibres and is now home to more than three million alpacas.

High-quality alpaca fashion therefore requires not only premium raw materials, but also experience, textile expertise, and people who have lived this craft for generations.

APU Kuntur combines Swiss quality standards with deep Peruvian roots and many years of experience in producing high-quality alpaca products.

What has always impressed us most is the combination of careful craftsmanship, modern colour palettes, and a respectful approach toward the people behind the products.

To this day, we value the personal partnership, the high quality, and the timeless collections that have accompanied our customers for many years.

Natural Warmth Meets Modern Design

Soft alpaca fibres, modern colours, and timeless designs combine warmth and style for everyday life.

Alpaca fashion combines natural functionality with modern style and exceptional wearing comfort. Soft headbands, wrist warmers, scarves, hats, and accessories provide pleasant warmth on cold days and can be combined in many different ways.

The fine alpaca fibres provide an especially comfortable feel, natural temperature regulation, and pleasant warmth without unnecessary weight.

At the same time, timeless products are created that consciously focus on long-lasting quality instead of short-lived trends. Modern colours, clean shapes, and high-quality craftsmanship create versatile companions for everyday life, winter walks, and relaxing moments in nature.

Thanks to the soft fibres, many products also feel pleasant directly on sensitive skin and are suitable for both cold winter days and changing transitional seasons.

Why the Quality of Alpaca Fibre Matters

The characteristics of high-quality alpaca products depend heavily on the quality of the individual fibres. Particularly fine and even fibres provide a soft feel, pleasant warmth, and high breathability.

For the production of high-quality alpaca clothing, not only fineness but also staple length, uniformity, and the natural colour of the fibres play an important role. Modern colour collections, for example, can only be dyed using white alpaca wool.

Since we keep alpacas in many natural colours, only part of our annual shearing is available for this type of processing.

We therefore use our own alpaca wool specifically for our Best Alpaca Bedding™ bedding products as well as for selected raw wool.

The production of high-quality alpaca fashion also requires specialised processing techniques and extensive textile expertise.

For this reason, we have worked for many years with experienced partners who specialise in processing fine alpaca fibres.

Our Wool Philosophy

Holistic Use Instead of Waste

This creates a natural cycle of use in which valuable raw materials are not left unused but are responsibly utilised – from warming bedding products to improving soil fertility.

Since we keep alpacas in many natural colours and only part of the annual shearing is suitable for high-quality textile processing, we consciously focus on the sustainable and complete use of all fibres.

Verschiedenfarbige Alpakawolle aus der jährlichen Schur wird im Freien zum Trocknen ausgebreitet
Our annual shearing produces a wide variety of natural alpaca fibres – a valuable raw material for us that is consciously and fully utilised.
For us, sustainability means not only good materials, but also conscious decisions, long-lasting products, and a respectful approach to every single fibre.

Many alpaca products can be personally discovered, compared, and selected in the Alparama® farm shop.

In our online product catalogue, you will find a wide selection of alpaca fashion, accessories, and home products made from high-quality alpaca wool. Many of these products can also be discovered, touched, and experienced in person at our farm shop.

We consciously avoid using a traditional anonymous online shop for a large part of our clothing and accessory products. Especially when it comes to high-quality natural fibres, feel, colours, fit, and personal advice play an important role.

This allows us to respond individually to our customers while also showcasing the diversity of our entire range – from alpaca bedding products and fur products to raw wool, meat specialities, and sustainable products for soil and animal husbandry.

This personal approach also reflects our commitment to a more conscious use of resources. Fewer unnecessary returns, packaging materials, and shipping distances often also mean less impact on the environment and resources.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Alpaca Products

Why Doesn’t Alpaka Appenzell Produce Clothing from Its Own Wool?

We consciously use our own alpaca wool for our premium Best Alpaca Bedding™ bedding products as well as for our Alparama® Terra Preta nutrient-rich humus.

The production of high-quality alpaca clothing requires very uniform, fine, and specially sorted fibres as well as specialised textile processing. Since we keep alpacas in many natural colours and only part of the annual shearing meets these requirements, we consciously focus on the sustainable and complete use of our own wool.

For alpaca fashion and accessories, we have therefore been working together with our long-standing partner APU Kuntur for more than 20 years.

The alpaca products of our partner APU Kuntur are manufactured in Peru. Peru has a centuries-old tradition in processing high-quality alpaca fibres and is home to the world’s largest alpaca population.

APU Kuntur combines Swiss quality standards with deep Peruvian roots, modern design, and many years of experience in producing high-quality alpaca products.

We have shared a personal and long-standing partnership with APU Kuntur since 2004. From the very beginning, we were impressed by the quality, modern designs, and careful craftsmanship of their alpaca products.

As one of the first resellers of APU Kuntur products in Switzerland, we still especially value the combination of high-quality craftsmanship, timeless collections, and a respectful approach toward the people behind the products.

Yes, alpaca wool is especially valued for its natural warmth. The fine fibres retain heat very well while still feeling pleasantly lightweight.

This makes alpaca products especially suitable for cold winter days, changing transitional seasons, walks, and cosy hours at home. Many people also find alpaca products pleasantly temperature regulating.

Alpaca wool differs from traditional sheep’s wool in several important ways. Many people consider high-quality alpaca fibres to be especially soft, lightweight, and pleasant on the skin.

A major difference lies in the relationship between warmth and weight. Alpaca fibres retain heat very efficiently, which means alpaca products can often be lighter than comparable products made from sheep’s wool. Especially in clothing, accessories, and bedding products, this provides pleasant warmth without unnecessary weight.

The structure of alpaca fibre contains microscopically small hollow spaces. These help regulate temperature and support natural climate control. Warmth can be retained without the fibre quickly feeling heavy or damp.

In comparison, traditional sheep’s wool has a denser and more strongly crimped fibre structure. Its insulating performance mainly comes from the natural crimp of the fibres, which traps air between the wool fibres. As a result, alpaca fibres often feel lighter, drier, and more temperature regulating than comparable sheep’s wool products – while still providing excellent warmth.

The surface structure of the fibres also differs significantly. Like other animal fibres, alpaca fibres have a fine scale structure. However, the scales on alpaca fibres lie flatter and protrude much less than those of many sheep’s wool fibres.

This creates less friction on the skin, which many people perceive as significantly softer and more comfortable. The more pronounced scale structure of traditional sheep’s wool, on the other hand, is partly responsible for the typical “scratchy” feeling that some people associate with wool products.

Unlike sheep’s wool, alpaca wool also contains virtually no lanolin. For this reason, alpaca is considered a so-called “dry” wool. High-quality alpaca fibres are therefore perceived by many people as especially skin-friendly and are generally regarded as hypoallergenic. In addition, alpaca wool is significantly less prone to yellowing than traditional sheep’s wool.

Another special aspect is the natural colours of alpacas. The fibres occur in many shades – from white, beige, and brown to silver grey, rose grey, and deep dark tones. Many of these colours also exist in light, medium, and dark variations.

Depending on the processing, fineness, and type of product, the properties can also vary significantly. Particularly fine alpaca fibres are often used for high-quality clothing, accessories, and bedding products.
