Material & Feel

Why Baby Alpaca Fur Feels So Special

Besonders weiche Struktur von Baby Alpakafell in Champagner mit dichter flauschiger Oberfläche
The fine, dense structure of baby alpaca fur creates an exceptionally soft feel.

Baby Alpaca Fur is especially valued for its soft, dense, and luxurious feel. The fine fibers feel exceptionally gentle and give each product natural warmth and a unique character.

Like other animal fibers, alpaca fiber has a delicate scale structure. However, the scales of alpaca fibers lie especially flat and protrude less than those of many traditional wool fibers. This creates less friction on the skin, which is why many people perceive alpaca as exceptionally soft.

Alpaca fibers contain virtually no lanolin and are therefore considered a type of dry wool. As a result, high-quality alpaca products are often perceived as skin-friendly, comfortable, and generally well tolerated.

Microscopically small air pockets within the fiber help retain warmth without making the material feel heavy or damp. This creates a pleasantly warm, lightweight, and temperature-regulating feel.

Baby alpaca fur combines natural softness, comforting warmth, and exceptional lightness – exactly this combination makes it so popular for home accessories, seat covers, baby mats, and teddy bears.

What Does “Baby Alpaca” Actually Mean?

No baby alpacas are used in the production of our baby alpaca fur products.

The term “Baby Alpaca” does not refer to young animals, but to a quality classification for especially fine alpaca fibers.

Many people assume that baby alpaca fiber comes exclusively from young alpacas. In reality, adult alpacas can also produce exceptionally fine fibers that meet the baby alpaca quality standard.

Baby alpaca refers to fibers with an exceptionally fine fiber diameter – typically between 18 and 22 microns. These fine fibers are valued for their exceptional softness, comfort, and skin-friendly feel.

Even finer fibers below this range are often classified as Royal Alpaca. The term therefore describes not the age of the alpaca, but the exceptional fineness and softness of the fibers.

Differences in Fur Structure

Huacaya and Suri – Two Unique Types of Alpaca

There are two distinct types of alpacas: Huacaya and Suri. Both have their own unique fur structure, feel, and distinctive character.

Huacaya Alpaca

The Huacaya alpaca is the most well-known type of alpaca and also the breed we raise on our farm. It is easily recognized by its dense, fluffy fleece and its characteristic “teddy bear” appearance.

Products made from Huacaya fur feel exceptionally soft, cozy, and instantly create a warm and comforting feeling.

Suri Alpaca

The Suri alpaca has long, silky fiber strands that hang loosely along the body and can resemble fine dreadlocks.

Suri fur has a smoother, more flowing appearance and a particularly natural sheen. Its texture feels silkier and is often perceived as slightly cooler to the touch at first.
