Terra-Preta Nutrient Humus
Naturally activated humus enriched with biochar –
for fertile soils, healthy plants, and sustainable soil improvement.
Our Alparama® Terra Preta nutrient humus is a high-quality, sustainably produced humus for gardens, agriculture, and green spaces. It supports soil fertility, soil biology, and healthy plant development. It supports soil fertility, soil biology, and healthy plant developmentespecially in Eastern Switzerland and in the Alpstein foothills region.
Through the combination of organic residues, active compost, and microorganisms, a stable, humus-rich soil is created that stores nutrients and sustainably improves the growth of your plants. Terra Preta is suitable for both home gardens and professional farming operations and is the ideal foundation for regenerative agriculture.

Alparama® Terra Preta Nutrient Humus – Our Production
At 1000 m above sea level, at the foot of the Alpstein region in Eastern Switzerland, we pay particular attention to sustainability and closed cycles. Grateful for the treasures of our nature, we invested our time, energy and resources in the development of a new humus product that revitalizes nature.
This led to the creation of Alparama® Terra Preta Nutrient Humus, inspired by the 7,000-year-old man-made “black earth” of the Amazon known as Terra Preta.
The foundation of our humus consists of:
- animal manure from our pigs, dairy cows and alpacas
- volcanic rock dust (Basalt & Biolit)
- activated biochar – the key element for water and nutrient storage as well as microbial life
This mixture is composted with finely shredded green waste and clay-rich soil while carefully controlling temperature, air and moisture.
The production of our Terra Preta nutrient humus takes place in several natural steps:
Application & Areas of Use
Alparama® Terra Preta Nutrient Humus revitalizes the soil and provides a fertile foundation for healthy plant growth.
Whether in vegetable gardens, raised beds, tree plantings or containers, our humus sustainably improves soil structure, water retention and nutrient availability.
Our Terra Preta nutrient humus is also used in practice and in courses – including at Permaria, where knowledge about permaculture and sustainable soil building is shared.
Incorporate 3–10 L/m² into the topsoil.
Incorporate 3–10 L/m², depending on soil condition and nutrient requirements.
Mix Terra Preta with potting soil at a ratio of 1:10.
For planting, mix at a ratio of 1:10 with soil and incorporate into the planting area.
Apply 3–10 L/m² to the surface and lightly incorporate.
After scarifying, spread 3–10 L/m² evenly.
Incorporate as a base fertilization before planting or sowing.
Apply 3–10 L/m² to the surface to improve soil quality.
For optimal composting processes, even nutrient distribution, and active soil life, can also be applied. Compost Tee .

Why biochar is the key
Biochar is a porous material with a specific surface area of more than 300 m² per gram. Thanks to this exceptional porosity, biochar can store up to five times its own weight in water and dissolved nutrients, making it an ideal nutrient carrier.
Before the biochar is incorporated into our humus, it is physically enriched with nutrients from animal manure. These nutrients then serve as a vital resource for soil microorganisms At the same time, the Biochar creates ideal habitats for microbes, which, in interaction with plant roots, actively enhance soil biology.
The Benefits for Your Soil Are Diverse
The activity of beneficial microorganisms is significantly increased.
Plants can absorb and utilize nutrients more efficiently.
Humus remains stable, while nutrients are stored and gradually released.
Through the combination of biochar, nutrients, and microorganisms, a living and fertile soil is created – forming the foundation for healthy plant growth and sustainable agriculture.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Terra Preta nutrient humus?
Terra Preta nutrient humus is a microbially active, humus-rich soil improver made from organic residues, active compost, and activated biochar that sustainably improves soil fertility, structure, and water retention.
What is Terra Preta used for?
Terra Preta is suitable for vegetable beds, green areas, lawns, fruit trees, berry shrubs, and agricultural land. It supports soil health, microbial activity, and plant growth.
How is Terra Preta correctly applied?
For best results, spread Terra Preta evenly over the area and lightly work it into the soil.
→ For vegetable beds, we recommend 3–5 L/m² before sowing or planting.
When is the right time for application?
The best time for application is in spring before sowing or planting. For green areas, Terra Preta can also be applied in spring or autumn.
Can I use Terra Preta and compost tea together?
Yes. Our Alparama® compost tea is produced directly from our Terra Preta nutrient humus. This ensures that the microorganisms and nutrients contained in the humus are optimally available. You can use Terra Preta and compost tea together to activate soil biology, improve nutrient uptake, and promote healthy plant growth.
How does Terra Preta work in the soil?
The combination of biochar, microorganisms, and organic matter improves water and nutrient retention, activates soil microbes, and increases the resilience of your plants.
How much CO₂ does Terra Preta store?
A 30 L bag Alparama® Terra Preta stores about 15 kg CO₂ permanently in the soil – a positive contribution to climate protection.
Can Terra Preta be used in organic farming?
Yes, our Terra Preta is produced exclusively from natural, organic materials and is suitable for organic farming.
Is Terra Preta also suitable for lawns and green areas?
Yes, Terra Preta can be spread on the surface of lawns or green areas and lightly worked in to improve soil structure and water retention.
